Monitoring

Planning to do some building or construction work?

You will probably need an archaeological survey before doing so.

In which case, LMArchaeology offers freelance monitoring work of archaeological features. Contact us today for a free initial consultation.

Excavation

Surveys have shown that you need to do some excavation work?

LMArchaeology has trained archaeologists who can assist you in small-scale excavations, specialising in small finds work, as well as the ethical excavation of human remains.

Archives

Just finished excavations? Need someone with a keen eye for detail?

LMArchaeology can offer all kinds of archive work; whether it’s a small-scale excavation, or a larger commercial company, no job is too big.

LMArchaeology has extensive experience in collating, organising and digitising Site Archives, for a range of projects, from small-scale sites to multi-faceted Road Projects. They also offer the writing of specialist pottery reports, focusing on the Medieval and/or Post-Medieval periods in particular.

Finds Processing

Starting to think about post-excavation practices?

LMArchaeology are trained archaeologists, specialising in the identification, processing and reporting of finds. We can offer a range of different finds-related work, from the general to the more specific. This covers a range of finds work, from identifying finds from a site, to processing them, to cleaning them in line with CIfA Codes of Practice.

As a former Finds Liaison Officer, Laura is able to offer finds identification for the majority of finds from a British context, with a particular focus on the South West. We can organise the processing (cleaning, bagging, storage practices and cataloguing) of entire finds assemblages, from any site, as well as writing specific finds reports for “special” finds.

However, our particular interest areas cover metal finds, pottery and flints, from all periods for general identification. We offer specialised and detailed reporting of Medieval and later pottery.

Finds Photography

LMArchaeology has several years experience in undertaking Finds Photography. Whether you are looking to catalogue a collection, or to take interesting photos for publication, we can assist with this. We have previous experience in creating content for social media purposes, for museum inforgraphic posters, for archaeology displays, and for more professional purposes, such as for finds reports, talks, and the Portable Antiquities Scheme database.

As well as Finds Photography, LMArchaeology is learned in the use of Photoshop, and other such multi-media editing software, and can use this to achieve your porject aims. Photos of theirs have previously been used in the Cornwall Archaeological Society Journal, in various videos for the Museum of Cornish Life, several different presentations at both local and national conferences, as well as being featured in the August 2024 issue of Current Archaeology.

Conservation

LMArchaeology is apt at undertaking simple conservation practices for archaeological objects from any time period, and this can be undertaken as part of other tasks, such as Finds Processing, or in conjunction with other tasks, such as preparing finds for high-res photography, or preparing them for display purposes.

We mainly work with pottery, and stone artefacts, but we also work with small metal objects, should you have found any out on site, or while metal detecting. At the moment, we cannot aid in the conservation of larger objects, but anything that is relatively portable can be worked with easily.

We also have specialisms in working with wall paintings, so should you have a larger project, involving the revealing, conserving, and consolidating of frescoes, we are able to facilitate this, in conjunction with other conservators.

Curation

Have you or your museum/heritage building got display desires in mind?

Would like to display some of your collections but not sure how to begin?

LMArchaeology has a fine eye for detail; knowledgeable in disseminating information to wider audiences, and curating engaging displays of archaeological/historical material.

As a former Finds Liaison Officer, and having worked with many museums in a curatorial capacity, they are no strangers to organising finds identification, cataloguing, and making best use of whatever display space you have!

Any display can be tailored to any audience, and we love public outreach.
